About This Course

In any music production, well-crafted arrangement will not only enhance the emotion and character of the composition, but also make the subsequent production process much easier.

The underlying principles will help one to make logical musical choices to create tension and release in music, making the music more engaging in terms of tone color change and dynamic variation.

The course is devised to examine the key practical concepts on how to come up with a decent arrangement.

Learning Outcome:

Upon completion of this MOOC, participants would be able to:
1. Identify arranging elements in contemporary pop music;
2. Conceptualize music arrangement from basic song form to full arrangement form;
3. Make harmonic choice for given melody with common chord vocabularies;
4. Create well-balanced three-layer arrangement with melody, accompaniment and countermelody; and
5. Construct coherent music arrangement with effective tone color and dynamic changes.

Mr. LAM, Pak-Shing

Lam, Pak-Shing, Berklee graduate, currently a lecturer of Hong Kong Design Institute. With extensive experience and passion in music education, Pak advocates the approach of project-based learning. By internalizing the basics, students can expand the musical language by analyzing the theory and techniques relevant to the project. Being a jazz trained musician, Pak balances the traditional and contemporary musical principles in his teaching, aiming to gear students towards making effective communication with the listeners.
