It will provide a quick revision on their properties followed with quizzes to refresh and reinforce their understanding, and then followed by examples showing their applications in solving engineering problems so as to arouse the students’ interest and preparing them to pursue further in the HD programmes.
At the same time, the results of the quizzes will provide information to the teachers on the students’ basic mathematic competencies. The results are helpful for module lecturers to understand the learning diversity of the class at the early stage of the module, such that appropriate teaching strategies could be developed accordingly
The mini-MOOC is designed as a pre-class self-learning tools preparing the student to study the module CON3303, or other engineering mathematics modules, and the MILS of the module CON3303 are:
- manipulate a range of mathematical skills in solving equations involving commonly occurring functions;
- find the derivatives, locate and classify stationary points, and determine optimal values of a function of one variable;
- find definite and indefinite integrals using substitutions, partial fractions and integration by parts;
- apply the mathematical techniques in solving standard engineering problems in construction discipline.
